siDEVO: Blacked Out

1 John 1:5-9 – “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

It’s 9 PM and the storms are hitting hard. The howling of wind, roar of thunder and slap of rain move you from your comfort zone. The sole comfort of electricity prevents the adrenaline of the unknown from flowing into your system. A major lightning flash steals your ability to see as the power fails. You clumsily walk around your house attempting to locate some source of light, only relying upon your partial memory of the floor plan. Finally, you reach the kitchen drawer where you once thought you saw a flashlight. Deep underneath the clutter of a drawer, you find the flashlight, only to note it to be lighter than in the past. And then it sets in…its pitch dark and you used the batteries for something else.

If God separated light from the darkness (Genesis 1:4), how can we so easily deceive ourselves? We try to live our Christianity in the shadows (between darkness and light), arguing that we are in the light when really, spiritually, that place cannot exist. God is light and therefore, sets the standard. Sin is darkness and because God has no darkness in Him, they cannot coexist. Exodus 10:21-22 says this about The Plague of Darkness, “Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness will spread over Egypt – darkness that can be felt.” So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days.” Can you feel the darkness in your life???

For me, my desire is to walk in the Light in the midst of darkness. I want to have an open, honest relationship with Christ…the type of relationship that has no room for the dirty little secrets we try to hide. I cannot and will not come to God candy-coating my relationship with Him, as if somehow I’m going to trick Him into believing I’m better that what I am. Not only that, I cannot and will not come to fellowship with one another doing the same. Life is too dark and cold to live in eternal hypothermia.

This world is blacked-out, light it up.

Matthew 5:14 – “You are the light of the World…”
