Artist Devo: Gift (Rhema Soul)

Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

One of the best Christmas gifts I ever received as a kid was a Vision Jinx skateboard. It was a hot pink and blue piece of wooden splendor. I remember breaking the box open and staring at it intently, smelling it, rolling on it like a dog on a milk bone, and probably kissing the grip tape. This was back in the late 80’s when my family and I would gather with all our relatives and party and open up our gifts at midnight. The thing I hated about this midnight deal, though, was that after all the anticipation and excitement had peeked, I had to get to bed. I could not try out my gift and share it with all my friends until the next day. I would lay in my bed with my board next to me, gripping a flashlight, unable to fall asleep for hours. All I could think about was sharing my gift.

The next morning, my brothers and I would rise no later than 7am. But all of my other friends who opened up their gifts in the morning were just getting started with their gift unwrapping so I had to wait even longer. All I wanted was to share my gift.

I read in Oswald Chambers this morning and he said, “Jesus Christ travailed in Redemption to redeem the whole world, and place it unimpaired and rehabilitated before the throne of God.”

This should suffice to remind us that Jesus didn’t just touch our lives so we could keep it to ourselves, but rather he “travailed” to “redeem the entire world.” You see, He likes to fix things that are broken, like some sort of majestic mechanic. The responsibility of the believer, then, is to share his gift, in word and in deed, with those he comes into contact with. We should actually lose sleep on account of wanting to share this gift. Why should a reward as large as freedom and as wide as hope be kept hidden anyway? You hold the Hope of men. Share it. Share Him.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! (2 Corinthians 9:15)
