siDEVO: Just Lean

Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the LORD with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

When you lean against a wall or sit up in a chair, more than just a physical action takes place. When you sat down at your computer, did you examine your computer chair to ensure it would support your weight? Did you see if the screws and bolts were tightened? Were the legs of the chair straightened and free from defect? Believing an object will support our weight often goes without thought, but we do it everyday. We just trust that it will work in our favor and act on it. How is it we can so easily trust in a wall or chair, but struggle with trusting in God?

Thomas, called “Doubting Thomas”, leaned on his own understanding. When the disciples came to Thomas and told him they had seen Jesus after He had been buried, but he refused to believe it. Thomas said, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it” (John 20:25). Many of us can understand his struggle with faith. It is not common to this life to have someone die and then to resurrect three days later and in that, Thomas put his faith. Thomas leaned on his understanding of how life should be or how it is, in essence, putting what God can do in a box. Real talk…we’ve all done the same thing over and over again.

A week later, Thomas and the disciples were together in a locked room, when Jesus appeared before them. Jesus looked at Thomas and said, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe”. When you acknowledge Him in all of your ways, God will provide for you, removing obstacles from your way. Where we may see an unconquerable mountain in our path, God sees a mountain that can be moved and defeated. When we see that we don’t have enough money to make ends meet at the end of the month, God may see an opportunity to use somebody who does to help you get through it.

Trust in God, knowing He created the Heavens and the Earth (Genesis 1:1). Trust in God, knowing He will never leave you, nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:8). Trust in God knowing He loves you (John 3:16-17). Trust in God knowing He has provided you with salvation and an eternity with Him (Romans 10:9).

The next time you’re leaned back, just make sure you lean on the wisdom of God.
