Artist Devo: Breathe (RAWSRVNT)

Why is it we go through life worrying about so much and stressing over so many questions that we don’t have all the answers too? Why is it that we spend countless hours contemplating what we’re going to do in life, where we’re gonna live, who we’re gonna marry, what kind of job we’re gonna have, how much money we’re gonna make, and so on and so forth, but yet we never wonder or worry or even think about when we’ll breathe our next breath so that we can enjoy all these things we think countless hours about?
Puzzling thought huh? Yeah it definitely takes your breath away. (Smile). I know it’s made my jaw drop several times and has helped me grow a deeper respect and understanding of God’s heartbeat. You see on an average we breathe about 17,000 breathes a day. Now in most cases that’s without exercise so you can imagine after a workout or a game of Football or Basketball you’d probably have to add another 1,000 breathes to that number. So…let’s just say we breathe a lot. And without even asking God, He gives it to us without hesitation.
Isn’t that ironic. The very thing that we need [breath] to enjoy life we don’t even doubt if we’ll have it at leisure but yet if we don’t get a microwave answer to one of our prayers we lose faith and doubt if God even cares for us or listens to our prayers. And what’s even crazier than that is there are some people who don’t even believe in God or even want to hang out with Him because they think He’s mean and hates them. Has anyone ever mentioned to them why do they think they’re breathing or how they are breathing or even more importantly who is giving them the very breath they’re breathing? Do some people actually think that they breathe because they say so?
In Genesis Chapter 2 verse 7 we can see how important our breath really is. It says: “The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” So basically God made us out of some dirt and then to make it official He breathed His breath into us so that we could live and enjoy life with Him. Man that’s cool. That means every time we breathe we’re breathing in God and His breath, His life. Another puzzling thought huh? Yeah…you’ll be on that one for a while. (Smile).
You see it seems at times we almost have more faith in a chair that’ll prevent us from smacking our butt on the floor than in God to take care of our needs and give us our hearts desires. (Pause). Something that always gets me thinking are the words Jesus shared with us in Matthew Chapter 6 starting around verse 25 (NIV). He broke it down so cool for us. He says:
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”
Wild huh?!! It’s crazy to think that birds don’t even have refrigerators but yet everyday they eat and never even worry if their Maker will take care of their needs. That’s some faith huh?!! I love how Jesus wraps it up perfectly here in verse 31:
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Man. (Pause). I pray that we get to that level of faith that we can boldly stand in confidence that God will and continue to take care of all of our needs and hook us up far more than we can ever imagine. After all, God is in the business of making us smile and giving us our hearts desires. And we can hold Him at His word ’cause in Psalm 37:4 it says “Delight yourself in The Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” You see God already knows what you want before you even ask Him or even take a breath to think about what to ask Him for. He knows what’s best for you and what will benefit you. Our job is to trust Him just like we do for breath, and food, and clothing, and shelter, etc. and watch how in trusting Him and delighting in His friendship all of our dreams come true.
Some might argue with me on that tip, but it’s true. You might say…‘But yeah I believed God for money but didn’t get any.’ And I’ll say…‘Oh yeah…think about how many meals you didn’t have to pay for because someone treated you to dinner or lunch. Or how about the clothes you’re wearing or wanted to buy and ended up getting them on sale or someone bought them for you. How did that happen huh? Who hooked you up with that blessing?’ You see we might not get things at the exact time, the exact second or the exact way we want or believe we’re gonna get them, but in time we can look back and see how God hooked us up with our hearts desires and met our needs far more than we could’ve ever asked Him to.
Challenging I know…but man it’s so liberating. If you get this reality in your heart it’ll affect every area of your life. You’ll see. So…I’ll leave you with this. Here’s a quote I’ve been using for years. It’s something that God shared with me as I dug deeper into His heart and truly found out how much He loves us and takes care of us. It goes like this: ‘If I can trust God for breath then I can trust Him for the rest.’ Won’t you trust Him today?
