The Prayer Connection
I have been thinking a lot about a friend of mine. She was an awesome blessing to me during a period of loneliness in my life. I cherished her friendship. Conversation with her was easy and uplifting and I could always be myself around her. I moved to a different state and lost contact with my friend. Through mutual acquaintances, I have come to know that she has been having some difficulties and I would like the opportunity to encourage her just as she encouraged me. Unfortunately I have still not been able to speak to her directly. This situation reminds me of my prayer life. How often do I put God in this same position?
I used to pray in a rush giving God a shout out in the morning and going about my day. I would often get on my knees in prayer with my cellphone on the bed beside me really not giving God my undivided attention. When you think about it we want our friends’ attention when we spend time with them, we want them focused and engaged in conversation, and I believe God wants the same thing from us. How can we hear God when we are so distracted, how can God hear us when we are not focused enough to pour our hearts out to Him.
Five minutes of prayer is not going to create an intimate relationship with God, it takes undistracted time seeking His purpose and will for our lives. 1 Corinthians 14:15 states, “I will pray with my spirit with my mind also.” This type of prayer requires all that we have focusing in on God. I am not saying you have to pray for hours on end but you know the type of relationship you seek from God, you know what you need from Him and only you know the level of commitment you are willing to exercise to get to that place. Just remember the Bible tells us to pray without ceasing (I Thessalonians 5:17). I believe in these last days God wants to reveal His truth in our situations and guide us in His wisdom to make the right decisions. I challenge you to go beyond the surface and touch the heart of God in your prayers creating a deeper level of intimacy with Him.
As some maturity set in I came to realize how worthy God is of the time it takes me to pray. Not only is He worthy, but I need Him in my life to direct me and to teach me His ways. How can I know God’s ways, but through His word and prayer? I come to God with my praise, my petitions, my dreams, my hopes and my fears; He turns a listening ear towards me and whispers words of wisdom and love into my heart. When I get off my knees the bills still need to be paid, the relationship is still broken, the need still isn’t met but I have communed with the Creator of the universe and if nothing else has changed, there has been a change in me.
