Devotional: GREAT-ER

withinlogo2You ever wish that you could have been somewhere to witness something you read or a situation that someone told you about?

As many times as I’ve heard the story of David and Goliath, that is one place I wish I could have at least been a fly on the wall to witness that victory.

Here is this young unpolished shepherd boy claiming that he could take on the challenge that Goliath presented to the Israelites. He was not just any giant, but Goliath was also known as the Philistine champion. He stood at nearly 10 feet tall covered in a bronze armor that weighted 126 pounds (1 Samuel 17).

And as he stood there taunting the Israelites to send their best fighter forward, David overheard him while he was tending sheep and felt like he had enough experience to take this giant down.

Everything about this scenario just didn’t look favorable for David. What could young shepherd boy possibly have on a 10 foot Giant—did I mention with armor that weighed 126 pounds???

Isn’t that the same kind of question we ask when we are confronted with what looks like a situation that is too great for us to handle?

How am I going to handle this financial bill?
How am I going to overcome this loss?
How am I ever going to achieve this academic journey?
Will I ever be where I desire to be in life?

We live life long enough and it’s guaranteed that we will deal with our share of GREAT and overwhelming problems, questions, relationships, and the list goes on.

We are going to deal with Great stress. Great pain. Great loss. Great disappointment. Great hopelessness. Great unforgiveness. Great doubt. And that is a FACT.

But let me tell you the TRUTH:

God is GREATER.

Point blank.

God knew that we would deal with situations and people that would pose as a GREAT threat to our walk with God in this life.
But His word says GREATER is HE that is WITHIN us than he that is in this world (1 John 4:4). And because of that, we overcome the façade of what looks great in the eyes of man by the reality of GREATER within us

The enemy knows He can bring GREAT in our lives. He is the Father of ALL lies. That is his job. His calling. His occupation. His destiny.

But it’s not yours.

Do you know about the GREATER one within you? No, do you REALLY know Him? Do you know what you are able to accomplish through Him? Do you know what you are able to overcome because of Him?

Because if you don’t, you will continue to keep the GREATER one within you silent while the GREAT things control your life. But that’s not what we are called to do. We are called to rise up like David with pure confidence in the God we serve and slay those giants!
