Ok, maybe its me, but when I read the title of this project, it seemed really corny. When I hear “to infinity and beyond” I’m expecting a Toy Story movie with Buzz Lightyear popping out somewhere. But don’t let the title throw you. Lil Prophet definitely does his thing on this album and that’s not just from a “kiddie” quality either.
This album is full of energy and you’ll see that from the very first song, “Up, Up, and Away”. I like this song, but I feel like I’m listening to an incomplete track. It’s mostly percussion. Look, I know that’s the style to have songs that’s just percussion and the song is actually pretty nice, but a thick and simple bassline would have taken this song to the next level in my opinion. Even just more of an 808 would’ve done the trick. I’m trying not to be picky here. The second song “PROPaDUCK” is another banger, but to be honest, one of my favorites the third song, “Look Like God” featuring Th3rd. I enjoy songs that you can sing-a-long (or chant-a-long) with. The hook is really catchy as they sing, “If it looks like God, homey, I’m a put it on.” I love it.
I like the flavor of this album. The swag is turned up even more on “Billionaire Boys” featuring Mr. Del, himself and Big Al. It has a great hook and solid verses. Things drop off a big on “Forever”. I wish they would’ve sang the hook differently, some of the notes weren’t really compatible with the chord progression of the song. It’s somewhat minor, in the scheme of the whole song, but it’s important to me and it is in the hook after all. Things continue to stay on a moderate level all the way through “The Most High”. “I Just Wanna Be Loved” comes out of nowhere with a different/smooth approach. If you’re not in a mood for something smooth or slow, you will skip it easily but it’s not a bad song at all. “I am Not Scared” is that track you can turn all the way up and just get stupid as you chant “We ain’t never scared!” …I can dig it. The other song that I really like (in addition to “Look Like God”) is “J.O.E. – Jesus Over Everything” featuring D-Maub and Rawsrvnt. Once again, a great message that we can all recite and agree with, as well as remind ourselves when our flesh tries to get out of line if you’re feeling me. D-Maub and Rawsrvnt bring their individual styles to the table and it all mixes in to create a really nice song. The album ends with the title track, which may seem backwards to some, but I think it was put right where it belongs. In fact, this song symbolizes how I feel about the entire album. It’s nice, but not quite there. It has some good moments that are really enjoyable and other moments that are passable in my opinion. There is definitely more good than bad on this album. In fact, there’s not much, if anything, that I would actually call “bad”. This project is very energetic and that is a great thing, because if all else fails, it will keep you moving. I look forward to more work from Lil Prophet, cause I think he has something here that’s worth investing in. The album as a whole ranges from moderate to good. But hey, everybody is a critic.
