Kent Matthews recently caught up with Houston native Lecrae who is returning home July 12, to perform with Jamie Grace, for a free concert on the Kemah Boardwalk. They talked with him about his influences, recruiting young talent and future collaborations.

Q: You have a lot of talented rappers on your label, Reach Records. What is it you look for when you are recruiting new talent?

A: Our mission is to change the way people see the world. We look for individuals that are artistically talented, because if people like the music they will listen to the message.

Q: What would you say if you had one chance to tell someone about your ministry?

A: First of all, I know there are a lot of parents that are filtering what their kids listen to because of the reputation of hip-hop with drugs and misogyny. What we have done in Christian hip-hop is redeem the art form. We are communicating God’s heart in rhymes. Most times kids are going to listen to hip-hop whether or not their parents know about it. A lot of parents tell me they didn’t even know this stuff was on their kid’s iPod. We are providing a positive alternative so you as a parent can be proactive and give your kids something to listen to that you can approve of.

Q: You most recently collaborated with David Crowder on a song featured on the new Passion: Here For You album. If you could do a song with any artist who would it be?

A: Right now I’m really enjoying Gungor and Tenth Avenue North. Hopefully I’ll get to work on something with one of them soon.
