One of the most important aspects of a musical album, especially an album from a highly lyrical medium like hip hop, is the ability to create a clear lens for the listener to view the personality, experiences and worldview of the artist.  Yeah, I hear your beats, and your rhymes (and for those in Christ—your spirituality), but do these concrete aspects come together to convey who you are. Dae-Lee’s The Great Progression does just that.  It is a solid look at the complex dilemmas and victories of a man growing in God’s grace.

With this in view, The Great Progression is strongest when Dae-Lee’s discussing his struggles and temptations. Love Hate may be the best of more reflective and introspective songs.  The song examines the Romans 7 dichotomy of giving into temptations that we know are bad for us while failing miserably to follow the commands of a God we know has our best interests at heart. Da’ T.R.U.T.H. blesses the mic, continuing the incredible hot streak since he started making music again. The fresh rhymes are tied together by a sharp, mood-setting instrumental.

Dae-Lee shows his versatility in the excellent, hilarious and insightful “I Need a Dollar”. Artists aren’t known for their vast wealth, especially in our little Christian scene.  The song is a great reminder of the importance of trusting in God for provision. Also, I’d be crazy to neglect the second verse by CutRight. He provides a wonderfully lighthearted, yet meaningful, take on the financial problems faced by the typical Christian hoping to succeed in the arts.

These two songs are just a snippet of the varied perspectives the listener is able to absorb through The Great Progression. Whether you’re looking for creative instrumentals (the face-melting Prime Time), the sentimental (Rescue and Thank You), or a vivid image of how our Lord uses our difficult circumstances for His glory and our benefit (all the tracks), Dae Lee provides it here.  This is a strong album from start to finish.
