Voice of the Prophet

When King David committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband, Uriah, killed in battle, the prophet Nathan exposed his sin and told King David what thus saith the Lord.  The Bible says the Lord sent Nathan to David (2 Samuel 12).  When King Ahab followed Jezebel’s lead in having Naboth killed and stealing his vineyard, the prophet Elijah was sent by God to tell King Ahab his fate as a result of his disobedience (1 Kings 21).  When King Saul disobeyed God by not “utterly destroying” the Amalekites, God sent the prophet Samuel to tell Saul the result of his rebellion (1 Samuel 15).  And when I sat in the midst of the congregation in my sin, God sent Ms. Mason to tell me what thus saith the Lord.  The Lord uses the prophet.

A prophet is defined as a person who speaks for God and guides the people in the ways of the Lord.  Throughout the Bible there are examples of prophets speaking God’s word, exposing the sin of the people and conveying God’s displeasure of the actions of His creation.  We still have prophets today that speak to us individually or as a congregation of believers, but the world and some of us Christians do not want to hear the voice of the prophet.  What we want to hear is that God is going to send us a husband, a house, a car or a job; we don’t want to hear the warnings the prophet may speak.  God told the prophet Jeremiah to tell the people; “I will pronounce my judgments on my people because of their wickedness in forsaking me, in burning incense to other gods and in worshiping what their hands have made.” (Jeremiah 1:16).  When we choose not to heed the words of God through the prophet, we risk experiencing the judgments of God.

Recently our President expressed his support of same-sex marriage.  I am not expressing any political views here, this is not about politics — this is about the ways of God.  1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says, “Do you not know that the unrighteous and the wrongdoers will not inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived (misled): neither the impure and immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who participate in homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. Leviticus 18:22 states, “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.”  God is clear in His word that the act of homosexuality is a sin and not His design for His creation.  You can believe and follow God or not, but we should not be ashamed of what we believe.

It is evident that our President is surrounded by ungodly counsel; the voice of the prophet is missing in the White House. I believe this nation is suffering at the hands of those who have decided God’s word is an outdated and should be tossed to the side.  I also believe that the prayers of the righteous availeth much. I have heard so many Christians whining and complaining about what the President has said and blaming him alone for the downfall of the nation. But what are we doing – hiding behind the church walls, hiding behind our Bibles, shaking our heads in shame at the President?  We as Christians are the light in darkness and the salt of the Earth.  Let’s be salt, let’s be light, be what God has called us to be in every way in all actions and in all situations.  We should be proclaiming God’s word and listening for the voice of the prophet in a spirit of obedience.  God has promised us; “A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.”(Psalm 91:7-8).

Pray for those whom God has anointed with the gift of prophecy.  Pray that they will stand in God’s power and proclaim His word no matter how unpopular it may be.  Pray for our President and our nation.  In these last days God has sent prophets among us and we need to hear the voice of the prophet so that we can be sure our ways are pleasing to God.  My prayer is that we as Christians would accept the prophet and recognize the gift as God leading us through the pathway of righteousness. I pray that we would be active in our jobs as salt and light to a dark dying world proclaiming the word of God till he comes.  Remember God’s word concerning His prophets in Deuteronomy 18:18-19, “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him”
