Beef with Chicken Sandwiches or Christians?

The Defense of Marriage Act, which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton, defines marriage as the legal union of one man and woman and thus denies federal benefits of marriage to same-sex couples. President Obama, who has come out in support of same-sex marriage, stopped defending the law in court after his Justice Department concluded that it was unconstitutional. The definition of marriage has become one of the most hotly debated topics of our day, in which Christians have been made to give a response about what we believe.

Even though it has been more a few weeks since the Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day and subsequent Same-Sex Kiss Day, the flames from the Chick-Fil-A controversy still have yet to be extinguished.  The whole drama began when Dan Cathy, the son of Chick-Fil-A founder Truet Cathy, said he was “guilty as charged” for supporting “the biblical definition of the family unit.” This caused a firestorm as LGBT groups called for a nationwide boycott of the business, the creators of The Muppets severed ties with the fast food chain, mayors swore to keep Chick-Fil-A out of their cities and there was even a “F*ck Chick-Fil-A “ lap dance contest.  Yes…Chick-Fil-A got the dreaded lap dance protest.  Some Christian rappers such as Shai Linne and Trip Lee (who retweeted a post by Garrett Kell) commented on the situation.

But in a tragic turn of events, there was the shooting in Washington at the Family Research Council on August 15TH. The shooter, identified as Floyd Corkins II, shot and wounded a security guard in the lobby of the Christian lobbying group. Mr. Corkins – a volunteer at a LGBT community center – had 50 rounds of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his backpack. According to eyewitness testimony, Mr. Corkin “made a negative reference about the work of the Family Research Council before opening fire.” One would think that all the media outlets would have ran with this story as much as they could. However according to News Busters on the day after the shooting “the network morning shows devoted a scant two minutes and 57 seconds to Wednesday’s shooting at the conservative Family Research Council (FRC).” If the situation had been reversed, one must wonder how much time would have been given to the story by the media.

This type of double-standard is not new to the controversy, during the early days of the Chick-Fil-A saga, mayors from both Boston and Chicago vowed to not let the restaurant open new stores in their cities. The major of Chicago Rahm Emanuel told the Chicago Tribune:  “Chick-Fil-A values are not Chicago values. They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents.” However in a stunning case of hypocrisy, Emanuel publicly joined hands with Louis Farrakhan – the Nation of Islam’s leader. Besides having a history of anti-Semitism, Farrakhan also made public comments rejecting gay marriage on the grounds that the scriptures forbid it. Yet…where was the public outcry from LGBT lobbyist? Where were statements from politicians stating their opposition to the Nation of Islam? Where was the endless twitter rants from celebrities?  Farrakhan’s comments went relatively unnoticed; but that was not the case for Dan Cathy.

In Western society we are dealing with a rising secular totalitarianism that seeks to silence Christians by the use of the “tolerance” movement. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, tolerance is defined as sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one’s own. This definition presumes that one must disagree with the view that they are tolerating. However in today’s morally relativistic world, tolerance now means that you better not disagree with another person’s views or you’re a bigot. The goal is ultimately to grant total acceptance of everyone – except Christians.

Jesus in Mark Chapter 3: 23-26 (ESV) says:

“23 And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end.”

Although on the outside it may seem that there are many differing viewpoints in this world, ultimately there are only two kingdoms – the Kingdom of Satan and the Kingdom of God.  The world targets Christianity because they want to suppress the knowledge of the true God with their unrighteousness. It doesn’t matter if a false religion opposes another false religion, or if darkness wars against darkness; it only matters when truth and light are introduced.

As Western society becomes increasingly antagonistic to Christianity we must remember what Jesus said in John 7:7 (ESV): “The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.” Since we are bond-servants of Christ Jesus the World will hate us as they hated him. In a world lost in the darkness we who proclaim the Light of the world will always be warred against.  At these times we can take solace in these words of Christ:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (ESV)
