[article.] 3 Hip Hop Songs I’m Bumping to the Voting Booth

Published on November 6, 2012

It’s easy to get carried away during the political season. Here’s three songs from our scene that are keeping me grounded on what matters most through election season.

In God We Trust – Beleaf Melanin

The Synopsis:

Beleaf’s got a little to say about both sides of the aisle. Witty wordplay captures the spirit of disillusioned millennials sick of hearing their vote will make or break their future.

Why Bother?

Because you’re getting way to rowdy about the election. A little too much debating here, a little too much “this guy on Facebook is unsure about the guy I’m voting for AND I NEED TO SHOW HIM HOW WRONG HE IS” there, and you’ve become that guy. You know–the one that’s put more hope in the commander-in-chief than you have in Christ. Get involved, debate, hold your position–but remember that you already got a King (1 Samuel 8:4-8), and aint nobody gonna vote him out (Colossians 1: 15-16).

Got Bars?

“Choosing a president is like choosing a fart to smell”

“Everybody claims they got the best idea/but they fall apart like a desk from Ikea”

Freestyle Fam –  Political Quest

The Synopsis:

Staten Island based Quest the Wordsmith, of the upstart Freestyle Fam, gives a provocative and passionate presentation on how he’s come to his voting decisions. SPOILER ALERT: he’s not all that happy with the President.

Why Bother?

First, you will hear a well-paced   slow-boil of  rage, reminiscent of  Eminem at his best. You’ll hear an articulate presentation of an issue Quest knows ought to be significant among Christians. He challenges double-standards and emotional appeals with Biblical principles and love for the least of these. And he ‘s not afraid of trading in a bit of nuance for the  sake of  truth.  Should spark a lot of conversation  on your way to the election. A lot of conviction, too. It’s gives balance to Beleaf’s  song, a reminder that while Christ is the answer, our votes do matter.

Got Bars?

I  find it hard believing that you even giving second thoughts to reason/ that are put forth when speaking against  a clear Devil’s teaching/ that a woman has a right to deny life to a seed/ to a womb she hasn’t weaved nor has the power to conceive!

Yo first of  all let me blast ya…/Need I remind you we’re voting for a POTUS not a Pastor

Christon Gray – Captain America (ft. DJ Promote)

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/59476609″ params=”show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The Synopsis:

Thoughtful, jazzy return to what needs to be the center of our existence–the kind of change that we need to promote and the change we need.

Why Bother:

Because our votes are important, but our hearts are too. Because government and politics have influence, but nothing compares to a man’s heart being changed. Because regardless of who wins, America needs to know…we already have our Captain.

Got Bars:

“land of the free, home of the brave/the man wasn’t free, cause our souls are enslaved”

“in my apologies I don’t know all the policies/I spend most of my time following prophecy”

Vote by your conscience, vote by the Scripture, and vote to the Glory of God.
