Christ-less Christians

judgementalWhat defines Christians in this postmodern world? Is it our Christ-likeness, our heart, our deeds, our attitude? Perhaps it’s that beer we have with our neighbor or is it that judgmental stare when our values are challenged. What perceptions are we leaving first hand on a nation clearly bent on mocking the God we “sort-of” worship? I wonder if our life is a fruitful witness or ammunition to tear down the legacy Jesus left?

Max Lucado said, “To call yourself a child of God is one thing. To be called a child of God by those who watch your life is another thing altogether.”

This is far from a self-righteous post to impress you with the little dignity I have left as a “Christian.” No, I’m just as broken, perhaps even more so, than that prostitute that has reached the end of her rope and feels she has no other choice but to sell her body to feed her children.

Is that the problem, the fact that she feels hopeless? And that we’re too lazy, too comfortable to reach into the trenches to share the hope that’s in Jesus. There are people all around us that are broken by the very hopelessness that holds them hostage yet we spend our efforts purifying the church with stones. We judge them, the irony in that.

Here’s the reality, “we are all missionaries…wherever we go, we either bring people nearer to Christ, or we repel them from Christ” (Eric Liddell).

Instead of pointing people to Jesus by feeding the hungry and declaring His glorious rescue plan, we’re playing church politics by tearing each other down with pointless and endless debates on doctrinal views and methodology.

What if we actually let Jesus live in and through us? What if we let the light of Jesus shine before men, that they may see our good deeds and glorify our heavenly Father (Matthew 5:14-16).

Maybe then, instead of seeing Christians, the world sees Jesus.
